Flutterwave is the leading payment gateway for African businesses and entrepreneurs. The company was inception by Olugbenga Agboola in 2016. And since it's been founded, the fintech company has steadily become a leader in Africa's payment landscape for merchants.

The fintech firm has seen significant growth through multiple funding rounds. From seed funding in 2016 to secondary market transaction in March 2023, Flutterwave has raised approximately $475 million across all funding rounds.

Flutterwave achieved unicorn status in 2021 with a valuation exceeding $1 billion. After that, the secured a $250 million Series D funding round in 2022, raising its valuation to over $3 billion. The 2022 funding round position the company one of the highest-valued startups in Africa.

Since the 2022 funding, Flutterwave has been preparing for an initial public offering (IPO), with reports in April 2024. If a company is preparing for an IPO simply means that the company is a private entity and wants to offers its shares to the general public for the first time on a stock exchange.

In other words, Flutterwave wants to transition from private ownership to being publicly traded, sell its shares to investors to generate funds for expansion, research, or debt repayment, disclose its financials and operations to the public while following strict regulatory guidelines, allow the stock market to determine its worth based on investor demand, and give early investors, founders, and employees the privilege to sell their shares in the open market.

In essence, the IPO transition will give Flutterwave access to more capital and potentially increasing its valuation. The company's CEO, Olugbenga Agboola, emphasized their focus on establishing robust corporate governance and operational structures to ensure long-term sustainability in Africa.

Meanwhile, it's important to note that the fintech sector has experienced valuation adjustments in recent years, which may have impacted Flutterwave's valuation, although specific figures have not been confirmed as of 2025. Even though the fluctuations affect Flutterwave, it net worth and valuation would still surpass that of Nigeria's largest bank by assets.
