Hindi version of Reddit is now available to Indians

Automatic translation of posts and comments in Hindi language is now available on Reddit. This platform has recently updated its machine translation system to support this feature in India. This development is aimed at expanding its user base in the country.

The automatic translation feature enhances the user experience for Hindi-speaking users, one of India’s most spoken languages, making it easier to engage with content on the platform.

Reddit is also planning to add support for Bengali soon. Bengali, also known as Bangla, is an Indo-Aryan language primarily spoken in Bangladesh and the Indian state of West Bengal. It is one of the world's most spoken languages, with over 230 million speakers.

Reddit started testing the automatic translation feature with French in May 2024, and has been added to several languages including Spanish, and Portuguese, in over 35 countries.

To use this automatic translation on Reddit, eligible users (like people in India, Spain, Portugal and more) can toggle the translations via a translate icon in the app’s overflow menu. Meanwhile, they have to mark the posts they want to translate to allow viewing in the original language as they wish.

Earlier this month, the AI-powered search feature known as Answers became accessible to users across Pakistan, Canada, Australia, the Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, India and the U.K. Before this expansion, it was exclusively available to a small group of English-speaking users in the United States.

It's worth noting that India remains a big target for social media platforms. Reddit is also working on taking a piece of the cake with strategies. The company has employed several professionals in India in community building, engineering, strategics growth, and legal positions, and is continually employing more professionals in content and community positions.
