Threads has officially rolled out its new direct messaging (DM) feature to all users. This addition allows private conversations between individuals, bringing the app more in line with other social media services like Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. However, there are some initial limitations on who you can message as the feature launches.
To maintain a level of privacy and control, Threads currently supports direct messages only between people who follow each other or those who are mutual followers on Instagram. This means that unless someone follows you back—or you're already connected through Instagram—you won’t be able to initiate a private conversation with them on Threads.
Accessing the DM feature is simple within the Threads app. You’ll notice an envelope icon located in the bottom toolbar. Tapping this icon will take you to your message inbox, where all your private conversations will be stored and organized.

If you want to start a new message, just head to the inbox and tap the pencil icon in the top right corner of the screen. From there, you can choose who to message and begin typing. While the current functionality is a bit limited, it’s a step toward expanding Threads into a more interactive and personal social platform.
Meanwhile, if you cannot find the DM feature on your Threads app, that means the app is out of date. You'll need to update it on either Google Play Store or Apple App store, depending on the smartphone you're using.
The Threads' DM is now available for users aged 18 and older on Android, iOS, and the web. At this time, you can only have private one-on-one chats. In the future, Threads plans to let you choose who can message you, even if they don’t follow you on Threads or Instagram.
A message request folder will also be introduced, similar to what users see on X. Threads is also working on adding group chats and inbox filters to help manage messages more easily.
Although Threads says its messaging system is protected by strong privacy and safety tools, it doesn’t offer end-to-end encryption. A spokesperson from Threads confirmed this and said they’ll continue improving DMs based on user feedback.
Threads began testing its messaging feature in June. Alongside DMs, the app introduced a new “highlighter” tool to showcase unique or thoughtful posts. Right now, this feature appears in discovery areas like the For You feed, but more placements are coming soon.
