When PayCom was rebranded to OPAY in 2018, and the OPay app was launched, request money on the fintech app was easy. But as scammers began to use it to deceived agents into paying with the hope that he/she received money, the feature was cancelled and removed from the app.
What am I saying in essence? Well, the request money feature was on OPAY between 2018 and maybe late 2022. However, the feature was amazing. It allows individual OPay users to send money request message to another OPay users, promoting them to confirm the request for the requested amount to be transferred to the recipient.
The request receipt looks exactly like transfer receipt. The only difference you could find was the words written in them. This makes it so deceiving especially for agent who just checked amounts on receipt without read the full details of the receipt.
Bad people usually use the request money feature on OPay to withdraw money from OPay agent. They'll work into any OPay Kiosk and tell the agent to give their OPay number that they want to send money from their OPay account to the agent's account.
Once the agent give his OPay account, the fraudster will make a money request message to the number and input amount. The notification will pop-up on the agent's account/POS looking like a receipt with amount. Unknowingly, the agent will only look at the amount with the successful check on it, believing the fraudster actually send money.
The agent will fall victim and hand over cash to the fraudster. Maybe later in the day when he or she want to confirm his transactions, he will discovered that the transaction was a money request transfer, no actual money was transferred.
This fraud was so much in the country then, forcing OPAY to cancel the feature on it app. However, despite being cancelled, there are another way similar to request on the app. You can actually use it to prompt another OPay users to remit money into your account.
Using "My QR Code" to Request Money on OPAY
Scan My QR Code is a feature of the OPAY app that allows users to send and receive payments quickly and securely by scanning a unique QR code. This code, which can be generated under the "Add Money" tab within the OPay app, contains the user’s wallet details, such as their account number and can be shared with others OPay users and agents to facilitate instant transactions without the need for physical cash, cards, or manual input of account details.
How to Use My QR Code to Request Money on OPAY
To use "My QR Code" to request money from other OPay users, follow these steps:
- Open the OPay app and tap on the "Add Money" tab available on the balance dashboard.
- On the "Add Money" page, scroll down and tap on "Scan My QR Code".
- Then, on the next page, you'll see a QR code as shown in the image above. To use it to request money, click on "Enter Amount" to input the amount you wish your sender to send.
- Now, click on "Save the picture".
- Send the saved image to the person you want to request money from. Tell them to use their OPay app or POS to scan the image.
- Once the QR code/image is scanned, it'll prompt the sender the details of the transactions such as recipient name, and amount requested.
- Once the sender confirms this details and accept it, the money will be deducted from the sender's account and wired to your account.
I believe you've learned the alternative way to request money from other OPay users. You can also directly share your OPay number or tag to the sender and tell him or her to send certain amount to your OPay.
If the person is interested in sending you money, this is the easiest way. Some people may not even understand how to scan a QR code especially if there's no second phone to scan the picture from.
Hence, it's wise to secure the interest of your sender, send him or her your OPay number or tag and receive your funds without stressing them out with scanning of a QR code picture.
